On behalf of the staff at Fitzhugh Park School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2016-17 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you are proactive in your child’s education by guiding and supporting your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and go on to college and a career
7) Is respectful and responsible and engages in the learning environment to promote a positive synergy level which value every student’s strengths
We are looking forward to continuing our work toward becoming a leadership school where great things happen on a daily basis. Over the summer, all teaching staff had the opportunity to engage in The Leader in Me training. We are excited to put more components of The Leader in Me philosophy and framework in place during the 2016-17 school year.
“The Leader in Me is FranklinCovey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.” Such 21st century leadership and life skills include: leadership, responsibility, accountability, problem solving, adaptability, communication, initiative and self-direction, creativity, cross-cultural skills, and teamwork.
The Leader in Me is designed to help our students succeed both in and out of the classroom by providing them with the tools that will help them learn practical character and life skills that will lead to those positive choices. The 7 Habits are: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw. Such next generation skills that are embedded in the 7 Habits focus on creativity and higher-order thinking and are critical for success as our children move towards college and the work force of a global society.
Throughout the school year, our students will engage in The Leader in Me lessons, activities, and projects that will help them reflect on their lives, develop leadership skills, and set goals that will inspire them to flourish. From the beginning of the school year, students will maintain a Leadership Notebook where they will put first things first by setting goals and keep track of their learning by recording important data and reflecting on it with the guidance and support of teachers.
Through the use of the 7 Habits, students begin to realize that they have control over much of what happens in their lives and can be true leaders.
The wonderful Fitzhugh Park staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to leading your children to success!
With Warmest Regards,
Principal Donna Simmons
