Abstract: Understanding that all people are alike and different is an important component of building a cohesive classroom. Therefore, this unit is designed to be taught at the onset of Kindergarten . It introduces the concept, "Celebrating Differences" which is a theme woven into a variety of units throughout the year. Children will also learn that although a family "comes in many shapes and sizes", it is a group of people who loves and cares for each other. Children will have the opportunity to develop expressive language skills by participating in an oral presentation as well as a daily journal activity. Lessons that reinforce the development of math vocabulary skills and the interpretation of graphs are included as well. This unit supports the kindergarten core curriculum for New York State Standards in English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Mathematics and is designed to to taught in one week.
