Recording Our Future
SUNY Oswego/OMS- Project Smart

What is Recording Our Future?

"Recording Our Future", project name for the partnership between Oswego Middle School and SUNY Oswego, allows OMS students to experience music through the use of audio recording and technology.  Students and faculty from SUNY Oswego will work with OMS music classes as they create their recordings, learn about various aspects of the music business, and discovers some career options for their future. OMS students will take a field trip to SUNY Oswego where they will tour the facilities, meet with faculty, and take part in meaningful musical activities. SUNY Oswego faculty members and students will also present topics in class. The culminating activity for this project is a CD release party. Students will create original recordings, learn how to create and market their album, and present their album at a student run concert. This project will run in the fall and spring semesters at OMS. Please email or call Mrs. Myers at pmckenne@oswego.org or 341-2300.

What's new this year?

The 8th grade music classes will form a record label called Buc Records. Within that label, each class will be their own record company. Within each class will be bands and marketing teams. Each band will compose and record an original song to be used on the CD. The CD release party will be a student run event. Students are in charge of creating the music for the event, getting the food for the reception, and putting on the show for the event.

We have added the music marketing component to the existing composition project. Student marketing teams will learn how to create an image for their band, how to advertise for their band, how to write a biography, and how to create a press kit. They will understand how the type of music a band creates dictates the image and marketing materials needed for that band.

The CD release party, formerly teacher run, will now be run by the students. Each class will have a representative from their record label at the event to act as MC (master of ceremonies). There will be students to run the sound, lights, hand out programs, and run the reception.

We have added new software and hardware. Students will now be able to use Abelton Live to create their musical compositions in addition to ProTools. Live offers a different type of recording that is very similar to Garage Band. Thanks to SUNY Oswego's Project Smart, we now have 3 Ipads to use in the classroom as well.

Project Itinerary:

1-Keyboarding project- students learn how to play a keyboard song and read a lead sheet. The song is performed for the class.

2- Music field trip to SUNY Oswego TBA October. This is not required.

3- Students form bands and record the cover tune they learned in the keyboarding project. This is their introduction to the software, ProTools. The completed files are presented to class.

4- Student bands create their band flyer and invitation for the cd release party. They also create their band name, band bio, and stage names. All are presented to the class.

5- Student bands create and record their original compositions which will be presented at the cd release party.

6- Emmett Van Slyke will bring his musical gadgets and show the students what is possible with music technology and about careers in the music industry.

7- CD Release party- this is the culminating event of the class. Students will be in charge of running the event. We will need party planners to run the reception, greeters at the door to hand out programs, MC's to announce the music, sound techs, and light techs. TBA January 2013
