Minetto fifth graders host Renaissance Fair Minetto fifth graders host Renaissance Fair: Minetto fifth graders recently wrapped up a unit on the Renaissance by hosting a Renaissance Fair with music, games and activities. The fair included 10 different stations where the fifth graders showcased a particular activity or game made popular during the Renaissance. Teachers and peers gathered in the cafeteria to explore the stations and learn a bit about things such as Renaissance art, innovations, and lifestyle. OHS students explore Doppler on Wheels OHS students explore Doppler on Wheels: In the days leading up to the solar eclipse in Oswego, scientists and weather enthusiasts descended upon the port city to capture a glimpse of the phenomenon. Among those visitors were famous storm chasers Josh Wurman and Karen Kosiba, who rolled into town on the Doppler on Wheels, making a stop at Oswego High School for a meteorology lesson. Students in Jason Guild’s meteorology class had an opportunity to explore the unique vehicle, full of weather tools and equipment. The vehicle often tracks storms and other weather-related events to gauge everything from radar to changes in atmospheric pressure and more. “This is an incredible learning opportunity for these students,” Guild said. “They were able to meet with some of the leading experts in their field and explore ...

Fitzhugh Students Explore Careers Fitzhugh Students Explore Careers: Fitzhugh Park Elementary students recently explored a variety of career fields during an annual event that brings together businesses, agencies, government officials and representatives from several job sectors. The Career Day event encourages students to research different industries and jobs they may want to pursue one day. Then, students have an opportunity to talk to representatives from different fields. KPS Hosts Successful STEAM Night KPS Hosts Successful STEAM Night: After launching a successful STEAM Night last year at Kingsford Park Elementary School, organizers were able to build upon that success during this year’s event. Held in late March, STEAM Night brought together more than 150 attendees and dozens of local businesses, agencies, organizations and school district staff members to engage in various activities. According to KPS teacher Kelly Moxley, who helped coordinate the event, it was a team effort that created fun learning opportunities for students. “We are incredibly grateful to our families and community partners who collaborated to make STEAM Night such a resounding success,” Moxley said. “There were so many smiling faces engaging in STEAM activities. It was rewarding to see everything come together.” ...

OMS teams with SUNY Oswego Science Department for Eclipse Resources OMS teams with SUNY Oswego Science Department for Eclipse Resources: As the Port City prepares for a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse, educators in the Oswego City School District are getting students ready for this unique opportunity by explaining the science behind this phenomenon. The Oswego Middle School Science Department recently teamed with SUNY Oswego to develop a webpage and list of resources for students and families. Spanish board games created for OHS college language course Spanish board games created for OHS college language course: Oswego High School students recently completed a major project in their SUNY Oswego Spanish 201 course.   Students were asked to bridge learned grammar structures with assigned vocabulary content to create a board game.   They had to employ the use of commands, provide any necessary pieces, create a set of instructions and construct the board.    Students held rotations for a few days to have the opportunity to both play and evaluate the games of each class.
NHS continues St. Jude donations, has raised $50k overall NHS continues St. Jude donations, has raised $50k overall: The Oswego High School National Honor Society chapter has continued its partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee to help treat childhood cancer, as well as to fund necessary research in hopes of finding cures.   St. Jude is fully funded through donations and NHS has been helping raise funds since the club’s inception.    “The mission of St. Jude has continued to inspire chapter members to be called to service and raise funds for the hospital through a letter-writing campaign to friends and family,” NHS advisor and Oswego High School social studies teacher Kayley Morse said.   All 72 chapter members recently gathered in the school cafeteria to personally sign 25 letters each. Lisk Receives Lifetime Achievement Award: The Oswego High School Music Department holds a concert on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m., where longtime OSCD music legend Edward S. Lisk receives the Al & Gladys Wright Band Lifetime Achievement Award in conjunction with the John Philip Sousa  Foundation. The award recognizes lifetime achievement in the band profession, including professional leadership, teaching, conducting and service, fitting for Lisk, an internationally recognized clinician, conductor and author. Lisk was a music educator in the Oswego City School District from 1970 to 1991. During that time, the band program become one of the most outstanding programs in the nation. Teams compete in Battle of the Books Teams compete in Battle of the Books: Ten teams of bookworms from the Oswego City School District recently showcased their reading comprehension and recollection during the Battle of the Books competition in the Robinson-Faust Theater. The event featured two teams — primary and intermediate levels — from each of the district’s five elementary schools. Third and fourth grade students took the stage first where they answered 12 questions about a selection of books they read. The teams had to correctly identify the author and book title that each question referenced. When all the points were tallied, the Reading Dragons, comprised of Lily Diak, Caitlyn Joyce and Dexter Nelson from Leighton Elementary, narrowly edged out their competitors to capture first place. OCSD Announces Kindergarten Registration OCSD Announces Kindergarten Registration: With the 2024-2025 school year right around the corner, the Oswego City School District is preparing for kindergarten registration, which will take place the week of March 4. Registration will be held at Central Registration, located in the Education Center at Leighton Elementary School (playground entrance) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 4-8. If you would like a registration packet mailed to you and your child will turn 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2024, please contact Central Registration at 315-341-2045 or visit www.oswego.org. OMS recognizes iReady math, reading accomplishments OMS recognizes iReady math, reading accomplishments: Seventh and eighth grade students at Oswego Middle School were recognized at the end of the second quarter for outstanding work on iReady Reading or Math.   In total, 23 students were recognized for having a school year to date total of more than 1,000 minutes on their iReady “My Path” in reading; and another 28 were honored for eclipsing 1,000 minutes in iReady math.   Each student received a certificate from iReady and an ice cream certificate to use at school. Their names were also read on the announcements.
