Fitzhugh Career Day showcases wide array of local vocations

Fitzhugh Career DayStudents at Fitzhugh Park Elementary School explored a vast variety of potential professional and vocational opportunities at the recent Career Day, a partnership between the school and more than a dozen local businesses, organizations and public service branches.

Held in the Fitzhugh gymnasium, students from Kindergarten to sixth grade eagerly crowded around demonstrations from Novelis, Oswego Health, the city of Oswego Police and Fire Departments, and many more participating presenters..

FPS Principal Donna Simmons said Career Day was an important component of connecting concepts students learn in school to real-world applications.

“Students are always asking, ‘why?’, ‘why are we learning this?’ and having the opportunity to talk with local people about local careers, and how you need to have the math and reading skills do those jobs, helps us make that connection,” said Simmons.

It was important for students to experience a wide scope of careers, according to the Fitzhugh teachers who organized the Career Day.

“We wanted students to see all levels of occupations and how the process to get into a career is different for each,” said fourth-grade teacher Erin Sabatini.

In addition to the Career Fair, students also studied mock interviews viewed through the lens Fitzhugh’s The Leader In Me program and Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
