Leighton Elementary hosts blood drive

Leighton Elementary School is full of pint-sized heroes.

The student body recently came together to host an American Red Cross Blood Drive, which involved child-led recruitment of blood donors. While all students in grades kindergarten through six were invited and encouraged to partake in the event, efforts of nine students were especially recognized when they were awarded the American Red Cross Blood Donor Recruiter Medal.

Not only did their work and subsequent blood donations from that help save lives, but each donor also received a special T-shirt. School nurse Jennifer Sharkey said there was a three-way tie for the classroom which sought the most donors; one of those rooms will be choose between a pizza, or fresh fruit, party.
