OHS Drama Club focuses on women’s movement

The Oswego High School Drama Club will feature the global and evolving representation of women during its upcoming 2018-2019 school year productions.
“Picnic,” by William Inge, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 in OHS’ Robinson-Faust Center for the Performing Arts with a remarkable cast which will bring the smoldering, Pulitzer prize-winning play to life. OHS students will help tell the story of a young drifter whose charisma and attractiveness disrupts the quiet lives of the women in a small Kansas town. The production will be directed by Garrett Heater and produced by Robert Dumas, both of which are Drama Club co-chairmen.
“Throughout rehearsals for “Picnic,” I have encouraged discussions among the student actors
regarding the gender dynamics of the piece,” Heater said. “It has been extremely rewarding to vet the merits of this mid-century play through conversations with the actors: What aspects of the play now seem outdated and which aspects still ring true in our social climate? The exploration has been eye-opening.”
The Drama Club’s spring offering will include 10-minute plays, all of which will showcase the strengths of women. Those plays will also be student written, directed and acted.
Rehearsals are underway with the cast, which includes: Andrew Bornheimer as Hal Carter, Audrey Hinman as Madge Owens, Bella Herrera as Millie Owens, Abigail Cook as Rosemary Sydney, Kathleen McGreevy as Flo Owens, Veronica Jones as Helen Potts, Jonathan Tsutsumishita as Alan Seymour, Matt Oldenburg as Howard Bevans, Grace Hoffman as Irma Kronkite, Jolee Wyant as Christine Schoenwalder, and Alixander Pauldine as Bomber. Assisting with the production are: Noah Elkin, Mitchell Hudson, and Mariah Pepper on properties, Adrian Putnam as the assistant to the stage manager and Lexi Reith as the assistant to the director.
