Leighton Elementary celebrates Read-a-Thon

Leighton loves literacy.
That was apparent during the elementary school’s annual Read-a-Thon celebration, hosted by the Leighton Home & School Association on Oct. 12. The event has sought to promote literacy and a love of reading in the school’s students because reading is as an integral part of educational success.
With the support of family and friends, students in kindergarten through grade six were challenged to read a total of 240 minutes in a 10-daytime span. They could read with those supporters or read alone. The top three readers for students in kindergarten through grade three were Lauren Jorgensen, Phiona Buck and Megan Campbell. The same honors for students in grades four to six were: Grace St. Onge, Olivia Emmons and Rhilynn Rudgick.  A total of 50 students read 16,217 minutes.
Although not required, students asked family and friends for pledges to support their efforts. Funds were used to purchase additional prizes and for a celebration for the readers. In addition, Jamie Turtura’s fifth-graders and Jack Schirtz’s kindergarteners received ice cream parties for having the greatest participation throughout their classrooms.
Any remaining funds will be used to support family movie nights, classroom celebrations, school field trips, a building-wide picnic or other rewards. The Read-a-Thon also received support from the following community organizations: Burger King, Cam’s Pizzeria, Canale's Restaurant, Children’s Museum of Oswego, Friendly’s, Harbor Towne Gifts, Man in the Moon Candies, Mother Earth Baby, the river’s end bookstore, The Comic Shop and Walmart.
