Leighton kindergartners attend royal ball

A recent Leighton Elementary School kindergarten academic unit’s culmination activity was royally cute.
The students showcased skills learned from a recent Listening and Learning unit on kings and queens, as the school’s all-purpose room was transformed into the perfect location for a royal ball. Upon entering the room, each kindergartner was announced by name as king, queen, prince or princess and then each designee waved, bowed or curtseyed in front of several special guests, including Oswego City School District Board of Education member Kathleen Allen.
Dressed to impress with flashing attire and homemade crowns, the kindergartners enjoyed juice and cookies before they waltzed around the dance floor. Teacher Heather Wood said the children learned what royalty meant, how kingdoms were ruled, royal etiquette and how kings and queens had the finest of everything. Throughout the unit, the classes read stories, such as “King Midas and the Golden Touch” and “Cinderella,” where they learned new vocabulary to use both in class and in a writing exercise.
Kindergartner Megan Jorgensen said her favorite royalty fact was how powerful kings and queens are. They also made laws, she said, because “they didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”
Wood said students were excited to learn that royals had servants and that is why some staff members dressed in black pants, as they served the snacks to their student kings and queens.
“This is one of the most fun (units) because it’s engaging and hands-on,” she said.
