OCSD students donate supplies for Puerto Rico relief

Students in Sue Thompson’s fourth grade class at Minetto Elementary School show off the hundreds of items collected to be donated to Puerto Rico relief efforts in the wake of devastating storms. The class set a goal of 100 items of non-perishable food, personal hygiene items and bottled water for the month of October but eclipsed that goal in mere days.In the wake of devastating hurricanes that have hit the United States and Puerto Rico, students in the Oswego City School District answered the call to service.
Students at several elementary schools have been collecting items in an effort to aid those affected by severe weather in recent weeks, stockpiling non-perishable food, personal hygiene items and bottled water for delivery to people in need.
At Minetto Elementary School, the project was spearheaded by fourth grader Ethan Leavens, who said he heard about the plight of the people of Puerto Rico on the news and was spurred into action.
“It’s a very caring community in here,” said teacher Sue Thompson, whose classroom serves as the staging ground for the donations. “The kids just embraced it. They were shooting out ideas, getting very excited, and every day they come in with bags of donations and get very thrilled to think we’re helping others.”
The class had set a goal of 100 donated items by the end of October but had already eclipsed that mark just days in.
“I’m a little surprised but yet so ecstatic that so many people are coming together,” said Katrina Leavens, Ethan’s mother. The Leavens’ had previously engaged in a supplies collection for victims of hurricane flooding in Houston, Texas, and decided to keep the effort rolling for Puerto Rico.
“I’m amazed and so happy that so many people in the community want to help,” she said.
