OMS students claim spot in spelling bee final

Four Oswego Middle School students have secured their spots in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Final with two familiar faces returning to the competition.
Iris McDonnell correctly spelled the word “ameliorate,” a verb defined as “to make something bad or unsatisfactory better” to punch her ticket and win first place at the OMS Spelling Bee.
McDonnell will be joined in the Regional Final by fellow OMS students Katrina Wallace and Anna and Mary Kate Cloonan. The March 17th event will feature the best spellers from around the Oswego City School District, held at Oswego High School on March 17 at the Robinson-Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts.
It will be a reappearance for Anna and Mary Kate Cloonan, who placed second and third in the Regional Final last year.
The overall winner will earn a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. to compete against the top spellers from around the nation.
