BUCS Take Second Place at OCAY League

Students from Oswego County school districts recently competed in the third Oswego County Academic Youth League competition of the 2022-2023 school year, and Oswego City School District took second place.

 

“The 315” was the theme of the day at Tailwater Lodge in Altmar, NY where students competed in a series of exercises that challenged their knowledge and creativity using their area code (3-1-5) as inspiration.

 

After identifying an invasive species found locally, the groups made “Least Wanted Posters” regarding their subject. But natural science wasn’t the only subject put to the test; students took inspiration from both local history and Shakespeare himself to write a 14-line iambic pentameter sonnet about an event that happened in the 3-1-5. Math was featured in addition to the fine arts as teams were tasked with breaking series of codes to solve clues pertaining to important places in the area.

 

The second-place Oswego City School District team was comprised of Jack DelConte, Quinten Denkenberger, Leah Dykas, Mia Fierro, Piper Gosek, Sean Metcalf, Miah Metott, Michael Paestella, Isabella Richmond and Sarah Westcott.

 

OCAY League was organized in the spring of 1997 with the idea that academics merit a standing comparable to athletics. Students’ academic skills are challenged and showcased in a wide variety of competitive events that emphasize scholastic excellence, team building, leadership and creativity. A particular strength of the league is its emphasis on cooperative problem-solving. OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation’s gifted and talented program.
