OHS Students Put the Grinch on Trial in Holiday Forensics Lesson

Oswego High School students in Sue Larca’s SUPA Forensics class celebrated the holiday season with a festive twist on experiential learning: prosecuting the Grinch for his crimes against Whoville.

In a unique hands-on activity, the classroom was transformed into a mock courtroom, complete with a jury, attorneys, witnesses and even a judge. Students took on every role, presenting evidence, calling witnesses to the stand and learning firsthand how trials work. Witnesses humorously “swore in” on the book of the Grinch, adding to the holiday cheer and laughter throughout the classroom.
“I think it was a really great experience seeing how trials run from a first-person perspective!” said student Lily Anzalone, who served as the judge for the trial.

Despite the students’ efforts, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision. With a hung jury, Judge Anzalone declared a mistrial and the Grinch walked free, much to the amusement of the class.

The activity offered students an engaging way to explore forensic investigation, critical thinking, public speaking and courtroom procedures while having fun during the holiday season.
