OCSD Welcomes Interim Superintendent OCSD Welcomes Interim Superintendent: Oswego City School District Interim Superintendent Jeffrey Gordon takes the Oath of Office Thursday afternoon as he is officially welcomed into the District. Also on hand for the ceremony were District Clerk Diane Schrader, who administered the Oath, Board of Education Vice President, Thomas Ciappa, and members of the OCSD Administrative Cabinet.  Gordon takes over as Interim Superintendent following the departure of Dr. Mathis Calvin in mid-March. Gordon will serve in an Interim capacity while the district conducts a search for their next Superintendent.  
Ag Week cultivates FPS 2nd grade Ag Week cultivates FPS 2nd grade: Fitzhugh Park Elementary School second-graders recently celebrated National Agriculture Week by getting their hands dirty planting tomato and basil seeds.   Sixty students listened to a book that was donated to the school, titled “Tomatoes by Neela” by Padma Lakshmi. It is a yearly program that Fitzhugh Park participates in that highlights the importance of agriculture and how it fits into everyday life.   According to the second-grade teaching team, the book and the hands-on planting allowed students to have a new appreciation for the efforts made by those involved in agriculture and how farmers provide vital necessities that many take for granted.   
BUCS Take Second Place at OCAY League BUCS Take Second Place at OCAY League: Students from Oswego County school districts recently competed in the third Oswego County Academic Youth League competition of the 2022-2023 school year, and Oswego City School District took second place.   “The 315” was the theme of the day at Tailwater Lodge in Altmar, NY where students competed in a series of exercises that challenged their knowledge and creativity using their area code (3-1-5) as inspiration.   After identifying an invasive species found locally, the groups made “Least Wanted Posters” regarding their subject. But natural science wasn’t the only subject put to the test; students took inspiration from both local history and Shakespeare himself to write a 14-line iambic pentameter sonnet about an event that happened ...

3/13 Interim and Acting Superintendent update 3/13 Interim and Acting Superintendent update: IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Interim and Acting Superintendent Announcement   March 13, 2023 Dear Oswego City School District Community, Earlier this evening, the Board of Education approved the hire of an Interim Superintendent and Acting Superintendent. Effective April 1, 2023, Mr. Jeffrey Gordon will be the district’s Interim Superintendent of School. Mr. Gordon has worked in education for nearly 30 years. He has been a fourth-grade classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator, director of curriculum and personnel and a building principal for the Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District. OHS NHS Students Campaign for St. Jude OHS NHS Students Campaign for St. Jude: The Oswego High School National Honor Society chapter has continued its partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee to help treat childhood cancer, as well as to fund necessary research in hopes of finding cures. St. Jude is fully funded through donations and NHS has been helping raise funds since the club’s inception.   “The mission of St. Jude has continued to inspire chapter members to be called to service and raise funds for the hospital through a letter-writing campaign to friends and family,” NHS advisor and Oswego High School social studies teacher Kayley Morse said.   All 70 chapter members recently gathered in the school cafeteria to personally sign 25 letters each. OCSD Literacy On Display at District-wide Battle of the Books Competition OCSD Literacy On Display at District-wide Battle of the Books Competition: The winning teams from each elementary school were recently put to the test in Oswego City School District’s Battle of the Books competition. Each team was asked 16 questions from a list of books carefully selected for this year’s competition, and the answers had to include not only the full title, but also the author(s) of each book for full points to be awarded. Up first was the primary level, consisting of grades three and four, who set the bar with a high level of confidence and energy. At the close of the primary level competition, the “Chapter Chicks” Jordyn Hollenbeck, Emma Stevenson and Shelby Wiegand from Frederick Leighton Elementary, clinched the victory.   The intermediate level competition, which consisted of grades five and six, went head-to-head ...

BOE: Superintendent search is underway BOE: Superintendent search is underway: March 3, 2023   Dear Oswego City School District Community,   We are writing to update the community on our upcoming leadership transition process. The Board of Education has chosen to work with our Oswego County BOCES District Superintendent Christopher Todd to both find an interim superintendent and to run the search for a full-time superintendent. Mr. Todd knows our district well and has worked with us on past searches.  Ideally, we will have a new superintendent in place for the next school year.   Please know as we are moving through this process, we are working to make sure we find the right person to lead our district and want to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. Letter: Further Minetto update 3/3 Letter: Further Minetto update 3/3: March 3, 2023   Dear Minetto Elementary families,   I am writing with a follow up after yesterday’s events to provide further information and an update.   In addition to the other testing I mentioned in my letter yesterday, last night the Oswego County Hazardous Materials Team and representatives from the Syracuse City Fire Department Haz Mat Unit completed additional testing at Minetto to further ensure there were no air quality concerns. UPK Registration Open UPK Registration Open: The Oswego City School District is accepting applications for the Universal Pre-K classes for the 2023-2024 school year. The Pre-K program is free to all children residing within the district and who turn 4 years old by December 1, 2023. There are 8 half day sessions and 1 full day session. The half day sessions are offered in the Kingsford, Minetto, Fitzhugh and Riley elementary schools. Morning session is 9:00 am to 11:30 am and the afternoon session is 12:45 pm to 3:15 pm. The full day session is 9:00am to 3:20pm at Frederick Leighton Elementary School. Busing is available by the district on their regular bus runs in the A.M. and PM. There is no busing at midday. Dr. Calvin on Minetto events 3/2 Dr. Calvin on Minetto events 3/2: March 2, 2023   Dear Minetto Elementary families,   I am writing to inform you of an incident at Minetto Elementary School today, Thursday, March 2, 2023.   Throughout the course of the day, six students and one staff member developed a minor rash on their skin.   As is normal protocol with concerns such as these and to get answers as quickly as possible, specialists including the local fire department, sheriff and a hazardous materials team were called in to analyze the area. Students learn Irish dance at SUNY Students learn Irish dance at SUNY: About 300 of our grades 3 and 4 students districtwide visited SUNY Oswego recently to learn about Irish dance including its history, costumes and traditions. The students got to see the dancers of Darrah Carr Dance, and some even got to join them on stage to learn a dance. This event was supported by OCSD's Arts in Education Program.

Senior Citizen 65+ Tax Exemption Update Senior Citizen 65+ Tax Exemption Update: In a move aimed at providing relief to the elderly during this time of high inflation and costs, the Oswego City School District passed a measure allowing more district senior citizens to benefit from property tax exemption savings.   This senior citizen tax exemption works on a sliding scale where the lower a household’s income is the higher the percentage savings will be on the school tax bill, up to 50%. OCSD Executive Director of Business and Finance Nancy Squairs said the exemptions generally would now apply to all OCSD homeowners aged 65 or older prior to March 1 of this year whose property is their primary residence and the combined income of all owners, and their spouses, is $37,400 gross before tax deductions.   “Knowing how tough times are financially, ...

KPS Student Council Makes Cards for Bishop's Commons Residents KPS Student Council Makes Cards for Bishop's Commons Residents: Amid the cold temperatures and gray skies, several Kingsford Park Elementary School students recently spearheaded an effort to make things a bit brighter for Bishop’s Commons residents. Members of the school’s student council made dozens of cards containing uplifting messages and hand-delivered them to residents of the senior living community in Oswego. The students were thrilled to bring a smile to the faces of so many local residents. Throughout the school year, members of the KPS Student Council participate in a variety of activities to benefit the school community and the Oswego community.
