Hinman named as new OHS principal Hinman named as new OHS principal: Raina Hinman, a native of Oswego County who has lived here her whole life, is set to take charge as the new Principal of Oswego High School ahead of the 2023-24 school year.   Hinman comes to Oswego City School District with more than a decade of teaching experience and multiple years working as an administrator for other districts.   “I am excited to join the Oswego City School District,” said Hinman. “This is a fantastic community and I look forward to collaborating with the faculty, staff, and families to benefit the kids.”   The past two years, Hinman has led Red Creek High School as principal and was the assistant principal the two years prior.   Before that, she was assistant principal in the Syracuse Academy of Science ...
OCSD, CMOO partner to bring Mobile STEM Lab to elementary schools OCSD, CMOO partner to bring Mobile STEM Lab to elementary schools: This past school year, the Oswego City School District and the Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO) teamed up to provide hands-on learning to students just outside the comfort of their own classroom. Throughout the spring, CMOO’s Mobile STEM Lab, fitted with interactive, play-based STEM learning activities, traveled and made stops at the five OCSD elementaries — Charles E. Riley Elementary, Frederick Leighton Elementary, Minetto Elementary, Fitzhugh Park Elementary and Kingsford Park Elementary. Jamie Sykut, the Director of Instructional Technology at OCSD, and Kathryn Watson, Executive Director of CMOO, began having discussions last year on forming a partnership to expand on CMOO’s Mobile STEM Lab approach. OCSD BOE opens ’23-24: MacKenzie elected President, Ciappa VP OCSD BOE opens ’23-24: MacKenzie elected President, Ciappa VP: Four new members were sworn in Wednesday and officers elected during the organizational meeting of the Oswego City School District Board of Education for the 2023-24 school year.   Dr. James MacKenzie was re-elected to the Board of Education, with Mrs. Julie Chetney, Mr. Sean Callen and Ms. Kristin Norfleet newly elected and all four were sworn in by District Clerk Mrs. Diane Schrader. The meeting was held Wednesday, July 5 in the Oswego High School library.   The board then was tasked with electing officers, resulting with MacKenzie as the president for 2023-24 and Mr. Tom Ciappa returning as vice president for his third consecutive year. June 2 Superintendent Search Update June 2 Superintendent Search Update: OCSD Community: As you know, we intended to present our three finalist candidates to the committee on Saturday, 6/3.  Unfortunately, one of our candidates withdrew their name from consideration, which makes moving forward challenging. We are pausing the Superintendent search so that we can discuss the best way to move forward with our search consultant. As originally planned, Amanda Caldwell will resume the position of Acting Superintendent when Jeff Gordon’s interim term ends on June 30. Our goal has always been, and will continue to be, securing the best possible candidate to lead our district to reach its full potential. Award-winning author delivers presentation to OMS students Award-winning author delivers presentation to OMS students: Oswego Middle School students recently learned about the writing and publishing process during a visit from award-winning author Dusti Bowling. Bowling, whose books include titles such as “Dust,” “24 Hours in Nowhere,” “Across the Desert,” and “Cactus,” talked to seventh- and eighth-graders about her journey becoming an author. She stressed the importance of reading, writing about what you know, and never giving up. “Writing a story is really hard,” she said. “But if you’re writing about the things you care about and the things you love, it makes it easier and you will keep going. OHS Top 100 Students Celebrated OHS Top 100 Students Celebrated: A commitment to academics paid dividends for the top 100 Oswego High School students who were celebrated for their accomplishments during a recent recognition night. The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oswego, recognized the top-earning 25 students in each grade level. CMOO STEM trailer visits FPS second graders CMOO STEM trailer visits FPS second graders: Fitzhugh Park Elementary second graders were recently engaged in hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities when the Children’s Museum of Oswego’s (CMOO) STEM trailer came to FPS. Students had the opportunity to maneuver a catapult, use magnets to create a maze for balls, build a small vehicle, stack blocks to produce towers and fashion instruments out of recycled materials. The CMOO STEM trailer provided unique opportunities for students to practice critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration. OHS freshmen class attends Career Jam OHS freshmen class attends Career Jam: The Oswego High School freshmen class recently got to attend the seventh annual Career Jam, presented by The WorkPlace, at the Watertown Municipal Arena, Agricultural Hall and surrounding grounds. The hands-on career exploration event is designed to highlight local careers. The focus of the event is to introduce students to the 16 National Career Clusters. Examples of the Career Clusters include Hospitality and Tourism, Health Sciences, Manufacturing and Information Technology. The aim is to allow students to get a feel for what they want to do in high school, and potentially as a career once they finish their education. Once students arrived, they received “Career Hunt Cards,” which allowed them to record the businesses they visited within the different booths of the ...
